Founding 1997 the sub-regional group was formed in Bangkok with the Name BIST-EC ( Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand Economic Cooperation).

The Participating countries of BIMSTEC “Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation” is Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan and Nepal. Headquarter is Dhaka.

Since 2005 the ADB  (Asian Development Bank) is the BIMSTEC’s development partner.
